my spine, how it feels aligned against the worn back of the security chair, a solid pillar even as the thoughts inside my head spin out, not frantically like they used to, but with a kind of deliberate, slow unfurling, as if the very structure of my being is listening, catching each one as it surfaces from somewhere deep, and that old tension, the one that used to knot itself behind my ribs, it’s mostly gone now, replaced by something like the vast, indifferent hum of the ventilation system in gallery four, a constant presence that doesn't demand anything but merely exists, and the absurdity, it used to feel like a weight pressing down, something to be resisted or overcome, a constant pressure on the chest that made every breath a conscious effort, but now, it's more like a lens, a strange, imperfect, cracked lens that simply clarifies the edges of everything, showing what remains when all the varnish is stripped away, and the objects in Gallery 2, those ancient Roman busts, they stand there impassively, unburdened by eyes or expectation, just IS, and this lack of demand, this utter indifference, it’s not an affront anymore, it’s a freeing, a confirmation that the effort, the beautiful, terrifying effort of deciding what matters anyway, that’s mine, solely mine to construct, a defiance against the vast emptiness i used to mistake for a threat, when really, it was just the biggest canvas, and all those questions filling notebook fifteen, they're not pleas for an answer from the universe, they're just brushstrokes.
