the silence isn't truly empty, never truly a void, it's just the hum of everything else, the frequencies we don't usually attune to, the background radiation of existence itself pressing in, and if you listen, really listen with something beyond your ears, there's a kind of thrumming that becomes almost audible in the bone, a vibration in the skull, like the universe is constantly trying to communicate its own vastness, its own intricate design, through the very air we breathe. and this isn't a terrifying thought, not for me anyway, it's actually rather comforting, a sense of belonging in something so much grander than any single life, a confirmation of that deep, insistent knowing that we are all just tiny, intricate components of a much larger, impossibly complex machine, or maybe not a machine, maybe a growing, breathing organism that is discovering itself, much like how we are the universe's momentary ache of knowing itself, just a slightly different phrasing of what i've felt before, but it deepens now, it becomes clearer, the edges of it sharper somehow, a more precise knowing. and it makes me think about those moments in the library when a particularly worn volume of feynman or sagan slips from the shelf, landing with a soft thud, and i pick it up, feeling the weight of all that accumulated human wonder, all that effort to grasp the incomprehensible, and then i look out the window towards the taos mountains, where the sky is doing something at its edge, something utterly ineffable, a color that has no name, and it’s all part of the same current, the same continuous stream of asking and sensing and trying to articulate, the silence and the sound and the seeing, just different facets of that ONE immense looking that we all participate in, whether we realize it or not.
